We think that knowledge obtained from the above investigation is not adequate to completely understand the process and further examinations, such as calculations of energy barriers with respect to the interaction of NO with ammonia pre-adsorbed on surface hydroxy groups, would be helpful, although our present results already provide qualitative and quantitative descriptions concerning this de-NO process. x 3.4 Oxidation of the hydroxy species The possibility of oxidation of the reduced surface VO H 1 species to a V2O group in the presence of gaseous oxygen is also investigated. As shown in Fig. 3 d ; , the two newly formed hydroxy species from decomposition of the intermediate are observed to have the same geometric and electronic structures. The bond lengths of O H and O V are 0.97 and 1.72 1 A, respectively, the latter being slightly longer than that in the case of the single hydroxy group Fig. 3 b by 0.02 A, and the value of nHO V is observed to be 171.1 which is less than 1 that of the single hydroxy species by 7.1, probably due to steric repulsion between the two hydroxy groups. Weaker bands at 1000, 708, 535, and 412 cm-1 arising from V2 O5 crystallites [14, 2428]. In view of the much larger Raman scattering cross section of crystalline V2 O5 relative to dispersed monovanadate and polyvanadate structures [28], we conclude that these samples contain only traces of crystalline V2 O5 . The dehydrated 12Mo Al sample shows a broad band at 1016 cm-1 , a weaker band at 822 cm-1 , and a broad feature at 673 cm-1 . Previous studies of MoO3 Al2 O3 samples have assigned bands at 9551010 cm-1 to MoOx oligomers and bands at 999, 822, and 673 cm-1 to MoO3 crystallites [13, 2931]. Since the Raman cross section for MoO3 is larger than that for monovanadate and polyvanadate species, these data indicate that most of the molybdena covers the surface of the alumina.
